Miley Cyrus has always rattled the cage and in her first bio-music film Something Beautiful, the rattle is a soaring blast, a portrait of Miley the woman, artist, poet, creator, beauty and lover. Umpteen sweeping costume and attitude changes, forceful performances and delivery, sexualised to the max is basically an illustrated fantasy of her new 13 song album of the same name. A poet, a musician and an athlete, Cyrus writhes for almost an hour in 13 personas – in spike heels – expressing and interpreting each song’s meaning, demanding our attention as she spills her guts with that remarkable, unique husky voice. That’s always been her way. Cyrus ponders the end of the world, love, longing, faith, life and self, big ideas, and delivers a emotional musical knockout. The film’s masterfully mixed by Alan Meyerson ( Dune Part One, The Dark Knight and Dunkirk) so its BIG. I’m impressed by Cyrus, now 32, this layered artist, former teen pop star whose personality is right there in her songs. She has acted and recently said she’d like to return to it, but the role “must be either an extension of herself or a character ‘with a personality that can conquer [her] own’ “. One of a kind, as is this musical wallop, Something Beautiful. Cyrus’ “pop opera” opens in theatres across Canada and the US on June 12, 10.30 p.m. for ONE NIGHT ONLY.
