Dr. Shirley Cheechoo and the 6th Annual Weengushk International Film Festival on Manitoulin Island

in Entertainment, What She Said on 07/12/23

The 6th annual Weengushk International Film Festival (WIFF) July 14-16, 2023 on beautiful Manitoulin Island brings a wealth of film arts to this remote part of Northern Ontario. 57 Indigenous-made films from around the world will be shown alongside a star-studded lineup of Indigenous Canadian indigenous actors/ filmmakers including Gail Maurice, Jennifer Podemski, and Gary Farmer. WIFF was founded by filmmaker, activist, and Order of Canada member Dr. Shirley Cheechoo to give back those opportunities the arts gave her as a young person. Cheechoo and writer, actor, director, producer, and Olympic athlete Phyllis Ellis spoke with What She Said’ Anne Brodie about the origins of WIFF and two of WIFF’s Honourees, Graham Greene and Ryan Reynolds.
