Anishinaabe actress, writer and activist Sarain Fox travelled to Northern Ontario to film her grandmother Mary Bell telling stories before it was too late. Indigenous populations are especially vulnerable to COVID 19 and Fox wanted to learn about “Auntie’s” experiences in residential schools and the repercussions through her life. These schools were commonplace in Canada from the 1880s until a couple of decades ago. Indigenous children were forcibly taken from their families by the Canadian government and placed in Christian warehouse schools to “knock the Indian out of them” through assimilation. Auntie’s memories are hard to hear but there is joy and unity in her life today. What She Said’ Anne Brodie spoke with Fox.
